All creatures…

On the first day of the new year, 2011, I choose to feature one of my smallest fellow residents, found lazing in a hydrangea flower.

And I think how lucky he is to live in a protected habitat where only his natural enemies can affect his life.

Yet even in a gazetted Refuge and with a conservation contract on my deeds in perpetuity, were there coal under us, nothing would protect him or me from mining. Coal does not follow the same laws as the rest of our land users.

And that has to change.

Coal needs to be deposed as King in this country.

My New Year resolution is to keep working to make that happen.

  1. The more people like yourself who show children the wonders of nature, the brighter the future looks, Laura.

  2. What a beautiful photo to start off the year, and yes, Sharyn, I share your concerns re the mining of coal. It is astounding that we only own the first little layer of our land. Let’s keep our focus and energy directed towards protection of our precious environment.
And yes, I am still hopping….!
    Cheers, Laura.

  3. Hi Denis, and may you also keep up your strength this year for the many things you do for the environment.
Everything leads into coal for me at present; it’s my only reality until I finish writing about it.
Yes it is an Eastern Dwarf Tree Frog but as I said in ‘Mountain Tails’, he’s more of a Prince than a Dwarf. I did a post on one spotted on the waterlilies, I think, a few years ago.

  4. Hi Sharyn
Lovely lead in to the real point about coal.
    I agree entirely.
Your gorgeous frog might be a “Eastern Dwarf Tree Frog” – Litoria fallax.
Keep up the fight against coal.
    Happy New Year.
    Denis

  5. Sharyn,
What a wonderful way to start the new year with this little
friend. Your photo brought tears to my eyes for the joy it brings
and for the sadness of thinking that these natural delights could
    ever be destroyed.
Why do we need fireworks when all the sparkle and colour is
    right before our eyes?
Your new year resolution is one we share with you.
    Jenny
