Taking turns

For the first time in about a month I put some wild bird seed in the dish on the verandah railing. With an hour the advance guard of two of the main seed-scoffers had arrived.

Did they check every day on the offchance? Here was the magpie, number one in the pecking order and the rosella, number three, but where was the currawong, usually number two?

The rosella was taking tiny steps forward and back, not really advancing enough to threaten the maggie, but showing no signs of giving up before getting a go at the seed scraps. A patient shuffling, a measured show of bravado…

…and a very wise decision by the rosey to remain the other side of the post and await its turn, when you look at the formidable face of a magpie up close!
